Fairer Pay campaign with Richard Wilkinson

**This event has now happened ***

What’s happening? To launch the campaign and discuss his and Kate Pickett’s research (”The Spirit Level’), Richard Wilkinson has agreed to come down to Leeds Met. Let’s give him a warm welcome and make Leeds Met a Fair Pay university. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and drinks.

When? 17th April 2013 18.00-19.30.

Where? RB313, Rose Bowl, City Campus, Leeds Metropolitan University.

Background to campaign
Here at Leeds Met, many of our agency staff are paid the minimum wage of £6.19 an hour. This simply is not enough to live on (see: http://goo.gl/GJmn8). In addition, our Vice Chancellor is paid 18 times more than these staff- creating a pay ratio of 18:1 (see: http://goo.gl/K09LK). Richard Wilkinson’s and Kate Pickett’s research into income inequality outlines the problems of such a high pay ratio including unhappier staff, decreased productivity and many others.

The Young Green’s campaign ‘Fair Pay Campus’ aims to change this by lobbying Universities to pay the living wage to all staff and to reduce their pay ratio to 10:1 (the pay ratio of the army, hospitals and other UK public bodies). The Leeds Met Greens (and anyone else interested) want to bring the campaign here to Leeds Met. Leeds Met have the chance to be the first (ethical) Fair Pay University.
